Boa Vista and the Sun: How to Enjoy Cape Verde Without Getting Caught Out

There are a few things worth knowing before you arrive in Boa Vista.
One of them is the sun.
The island can be wonderfully deceptive. You may be sitting on the beach, feeling a steady Atlantic breeze, perhaps under a slightly cloudy sky, and think: “The sun isn't that strong today.”
Then evening comes.
Your shoulders are red.
Your skin feels tight.
Your face is burning.
And the first day of your holiday suddenly becomes a search for something to soothe a sunburn.
The reason is simple: wind can make you feel cooler, but it does not protect you from UV radiation.
Clouds do not automatically block UV either, and sand and water can reflect ultraviolet radiation. International health guidance therefore recommends taking sun-protection measures even when the weather does not feel particularly hot.
This is not about avoiding the sun.
It is about enjoying Boa Vista intelligently.
The biggest mistake: “It doesn't feel hot”
This is one of the most common holiday mistakes.
The Atlantic breeze can make spending time outdoors extremely pleasant, especially on the beach or during an excursion.
But the temperature you feel on your skin is not a reliable indication of UV exposure.
Ultraviolet radiation cannot be seen or felt in the same way as heat.
So don't use wind, temperature or clouds as your guide to whether you need sun protection.
Sunscreen: start from day one
If there is one thing that should always be in your suitcase for Boa Vista, it is good sunscreen.
And don't wait until you've already spent a day in the sun.
Day one is already a day of exposure.
For everyday holiday protection, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, protecting against both UVA and UVB rays.
An SPF 30 or higher is a sensible minimum. SPF 50 or 50+ is particularly appropriate for very fair skin, the first days of intense exposure and long periods outdoors.
Don't forget areas that are easily missed:
ears
neck and back of the neck
nose
forehead
shoulders
hands
feet
lips, using an SPF lip balm
Applying sunscreen once isn't enough
Putting sunscreen on in the morning and forgetting about it until evening is not enough.
Reapply it at least every two hours, and especially after swimming, sweating or physical activity.
This is particularly important in Boa Vista because so many experiences take place outdoors:
beaches
dunes
boat trips
quad and buggy excursions
snorkelling
whale watching during the season
turtle-watching
walks around Sal Rei
Take your sunscreen with you, not just to the beach.
“But it's windy!”
Exactly.
And that's what makes Boa Vista so special.
The Atlantic wind is part of the island's character. It shapes the dunes, cools the beaches and creates perfect conditions for many water and outdoor activities.
But it can also be misleading.
The breeze cools your skin and can make the sun feel much less intense.
It doesn't reduce your need for UV protection.
In fact, you may stay outside longer precisely because you feel comfortable.
Protect your eyes too
Your skin isn't the only thing exposed to the sun.
The intense light, combined with reflections from sand and water, makes sunglasses an important part of your holiday kit.
This is particularly relevant if you have light-coloured or light-sensitive eyes.
Don't choose sunglasses only because they look good.
Look for lenses offering proper UVA and UVB protection.
A good pair of sunglasses is not simply a fashion accessory on Boa Vista.
It's part of your everyday sun protection.
A hat belongs in every suitcase
Beach.
Dunes.
Excursions.
Boat trips.
Walking around Sal Rei.
A hat takes almost no space in your luggage and can make a real difference during a long day outdoors.
A wide-brimmed hat is particularly useful because it can help shade your face, ears, neck and head.
And what about keeping your head wet?
It can certainly help you feel cooler, but remember:
wet hair is not sun protection.
Use water to cool down, but keep using your hat, shade and other forms of protection.
Don't protect yourself only at the beach
Some of the best ways to discover Boa Vista take place far beyond the hotel pool.
Dunes.
Desert landscapes.
Wild beaches.
4x4 excursions.
Quad and buggy tours.
Snorkelling.
Whale watching.
Sea turtles.
Boat trips.
You can easily spend several hours outdoors without realising how much sun exposure you've had.
That's why sun protection should be part of your whole day, not just your beach routine.
Pay attention to the middle of the day
UV radiation is generally strongest around the middle of the day.
Whenever possible, alternate direct sun with shade and avoid unnecessary exposure during the strongest part of the day.
This doesn't mean staying indoors.
It simply means planning your day intelligently.
A little shade, a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water can make a huge difference.
The Boa Vista sun is part of the experience
We're not here to tell you to be afraid of the sun.
Boa Vista is made to be experienced outdoors.
Ocean, wind, dunes, beaches, excursions, sunsets.
Long days outside.
That's exactly why it's worth arriving prepared.
Sunscreen. Sunglasses. A hat. Water. Shade when needed.
And above all, remember one simple thing:
The wind is not a shield against the sun.
Small habits can make a big difference to the way you experience your holiday.
Arrive prepared. Then enjoy Boa Vista.
Before you leave home, put together your little Boa Vista sun kit:
☑️ SPF 30+ sunscreen☑️ UVA/UVB-protective sunglasses☑️ Hat☑️ SPF lip balm☑️ Plenty of water☑️ Light clothing and, when appropriate, covering clothing☑️ Curiosity for discovering the island
The rest?
You'll find it here.
