Where is the Viana Desert?
The Viana Desert is located inland in the north-western part of Boa Vista, not far from the village of Rabil. Its pale dunes create one of the island’s most distinctive landscapes, surrounded by dark volcanic soil and sparse vegetation.
The desert stretches for approximately five kilometres and is around one kilometre wide. Its sand has been carried across the Atlantic from the African continent by the trade winds, gradually forming the dunes visible today

How to reach the Viana Desert
The tracks leading to the Viana Desert are sandy and uneven, making them unsuitable for most standard vehicles. The safest and easiest option is to visit with a suitable off-road vehicle and an experienced local guide.

The best time to visit
The Viana Desert can be visited throughout the year. The cooler months, particularly from October to June, generally offer more comfortable conditions for outdoor excursions.
Early morning and late afternoon provide softer temperatures and more atmospheric light, while the central hours of the day can feel considerably hotter.

Recommended duration
Allow between one and three hours, depending on whether the desert is visited alone or as part of a wider island tour.
